🔴 New Style of Cyber Fraud: Fraudsters as Fake Police Officers on Video Calls – Be Alert!
— By Advocate Anurag Bhati, www.lawyerhelp.xyz

Nowadays, cybercriminals are using new tricks to cheat innocent people. One dangerous and scary fraud method that is increasing rapidly is when the fraudster pretends to be a police officer and connects with people over a video call.

Let’s understand how this fraud works and how you can protect yourself.

🚨 How does this fraud happen?

  1. Video calls in police uniform:
The fraudster wears a police uniform and makes a video call with a fake background that looks like a police station or jail. This is done to scare the victim and make them believe it is real.
  2. They say – Don’t tell anyone:
The first thing they say is, “This is a confidential matter, do not talk to anyone about this call.” They try to create fear so that you don’t share anything with family or friends.
  3. They don’t let you disconnect the call:
They make sure that you don’t disconnect the call even when you go outside or to the bank. They ask you to keep the call active in your pocket, so they can hear everything and make sure you don’t inform anyone.
  4. They ask you to send money:
They tell you to go to the bank and send money through NEFT or RTGS to their account. Since the victim is already scared, they often end up sending the money without thinking much.

🕵️‍♂️ What lies do they use to scare you?

These fraudsters create fake stories to scare you, like:

  • “Bank accounts have been opened using your Aadhaar card.”
  • “Suspicious activity is happening in your bank account.”
  • “Your electricity/gas/internet connection will be disconnected.”
  • “There is an arrest warrant against you.”
  • “You were watching porn or illegal websites, and we will inform your family or police.”
  • “We have proof – send money or face legal action.”

These are all fake threats to create fear and trap you.

📞 They call from different numbers:

The fraudster may call you from many different numbers. If you block one number, they will try again from another. Sometimes they may also act as other officers from their gang to make it look more real.

💹 They may offer fake investment schemes too:

Some fraudsters pretend to be investment advisors or share market experts and say things like “Invest ₹10,000 and earn ₹1 lakh.” These are fake schemes to loot your money.

✅ How to protect yourself from such frauds?

  1. Never trust unknown video calls.
  2. If someone claims to be a police officer and asks for money – it is a fraud.
  3. Never share your bank details or OTP with anyone.
  4. If you feel scared, immediately cut the call and talk to a family member or friend.
  5. Report such cases to the nearest police station or on the cybercrime website.
  6. Never invest in any scheme without proper verification.

🧠 Remember – Don’t stay silent, speak up!

If you receive any call that makes you scared, asks for money, or tells you not to inform anyone – don’t stay silent. Talk to your family, friend, banker, lawyer, or even a neighbor.

Staying silent is what helps the fraudster. Speaking up is what saves you.

🚔 What to do if you become a victim?

  • Contact your bank immediately and try to stop the transaction.
  • File a complaint on www.cybercrime.gov.in
  • File an FIR in your nearest police station.
  • Save screenshots, call details, and chat messages for evidence.

✋ Conclusion:

Cybercriminals are not just using technology – they are playing with your emotions and fear. A normal person can get scared by seeing a police uniform, jail setup, or hearing legal threats. But if you stay alert, take advice, and don’t hide things, you can protect yourself and your family.

Be smart – Be alert – and don’t let anyone fool you!
